The University of Queensland Cricket Club has defeated local rivals Wests on the first weekend of the Twenty20 competition last Sunday at Ipswich.
On a wet wicket that made normal T20 batting difficult, UQCC posted 119 and what would turn out to be a winning total.
No batsman really looked comfortable and wickets fell at regular intervals, but a useful 54-run partnership between Hamish Gardiner and Jano Coetzee helped Team UQ.
Gardiner made 43 from 33 while Coetzee hit 20.
In reply, an all-round bowling effort thwarted the strong Wests batting line-up with wickets getting shared.
Scott Walter (2 for 20 off 4 overs), Michael Philipson (2 for 19 off 4 overs), and Julian Chinn (2 for 29 off 4 overs) were all economical in their work.
Sam Moyle, on debut, was a standout with 2 for 13 from his allotted four overs.
Earlier, UQCC’s first T20 match against Ipswich was called off due to a wet wicket being deemed unfit for play.
The competition continues next weekend with matches against Souths, Wynnum and Gold Coast.
