The University of Queensland Cricket Club has returned to the winners circle after crushing the Sunshine Coast Scorchers in Round 11 of the MyFootDr Premier Grade competition last Saturday.
The victory came largely on the back of a brilliant Ben Davis century, the in-form batsman clubbing his second ton of the summer with an unbeaten 105.
Chasing 295, Davis was the cornerstone of a comprehensive UQCC batting performance, with his crisp driving and thumping pull shots a feature of the innings.
He was ably supported by Jano Coetzee (50 not out), Peter Forrest (65) and Michael Philipson (41).
Earlier, Scott Walter took 5 for 68 from 26 overs to limit the Scorchers’ first innings batting effort.
With James Holliday (3 for 64 from 29 overs) by his side, the two opening bowlers ensured the run chase would never head north of 300.
Captain Philipson paid credit to his batsmen for the methodical pursuit of the total.
“Henry and Forrest gave us a strong platform before Benny Davis played a magnificent knock,” he said.
“We spoke about partnerships and not losing wickets in clumps and the boys committed to those plans.
“We had a 70, 50, 62 and 119-run partnerships which says it all really.”
The win puts UQCC right back on the heels of two-day competition leaders Wests, who sit on 61 with a one point lead following their loss to Norths.
